Companies Disable Security Features to Achieve Business Goals

matrix-434036_1280SC Magazine recently discussed the results of McAfee’s Network Performance and Security Report and revealed roughly a third of organizations surveyed admitted to routinely disabling firewall security features in an attempt to increase network performance. In light of recent high-profile security breaches, disabling firewall protection features as a way to achieve business goals is a counterproductive approach and is sure to backfire sooner or later.

The McAfee report revealed the following information about what firewall features IT professionals were disabling in order to improve network performance:

  • 31% disabled deep packet inspection (DPI)
  • 29% disabled anti-spam
  • 27% disabled URL filtering
  • 28% disabled VPN, data filtering, and anti-virus

Although routinely disabling firewall security features may temporarily improve your network performance, it is not a viable long-term strategy. In fact, it opens your organization up to a potential security breach and can cause more harm than good in the long-run. It also places a higher importance on performance over security, a risky move if we do say so ourselves. Eventually, the sacrifice on security for performance will cost a company big time. Is it really worth the risk?

Security is definitely expensive, but it doesn’t have to be if you fully understand the costs. The most expensive attribute of security is compensating the people who are managing it and ensuring you have an adequate amount of resources to maintain the equipment. Enterprises are always looking to save on costs, and sometimes take short-cuts to save and simplify their business. However, this can only continue for so long before it backfires. Companies need to evaluate their security strategies and find a balance, without sacrificing security features or performance for one another.

If your enterprise is looking to save on security costs and resources without compromising network performance, then outsourcing your firewall security is the best alternative. Outsourcing companies are able to share their expertise amongst their customers, resulting in cost-savings as manpower becomes much more affordable.  Enterprises can also leverage an outsourcing company’s experience and specialized skill sets to save on costs, support, and maintenance. Here at CentriLogic, an enterprise can outsource their firewall protection for a fraction of the purchase costs, and host their systems in a world-class data center without negatively affecting their network performance, speed, or ability.  We work with our customers to implement a firewall structure that best protects their environment, with host and network intrusion systems, vulnerability scanning, and URL filtering and proxy services for a low monthly fee.

Securing your environment around the clock is the only viable way to ensure you are doing everything you possibly can to protect your business from any security related issues.  Without firewall protection features in place at all times, organizations become extremely vulnerable and run the risk of exposing their environment to harmful security threats and breaches. Do you really want to put your business at risk?
